By Tanya Caruana, RHN

Healthy Eating on the Run image from goodnessme.ca

Wednesday, September 9, 2015 - 6:30 - 7:30 pm

Complimentary.

Instructor: Tanya Caruana, RHN

When we are constantly managing a busy schedule, nutrition is often the first thing we neglect. Eating healthy on the run is a common challenge people experience. We reach for fast foods, sugary treats or pre-packaged processed foods in order to satisfy our hunger. These unhealthy food choices can compromise our health in the long run and add pounds to our waist line.

But it doesn't have to be that way! You CAN eat healthy, tasty food when on the run. Join Registered Holistic Nutritionist Tanya Caruana for her seminar on Healthy Eating on the Run to learn how. In this seminar, Tanya will share ideas for healthy meals and snacks when you're always on the go, including breakfast, lunch and dinner. She will also discuss some of the common issues associated with eating on the run and how they impact your health.

"The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is the expansionist dream of Sonny (Dev Patel), and it's making more claims on his time than he has available, considering his imminent marriage to the love of his life, Sunaina (Tina Desai). Sonny has his eye on a promising property now that his first venture, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful, has only a single remaining vacancy - posing a rooming predicament for fresh arrivals Guy (Richard Gere) and Lavinia (Tamsin Greig). Evelyn and Douglas (Judi Dench and Bill Nighy) have now joined the Jaipur workforce, and are wondering where their regular dates for Chilla pancakes will lead, while Norman and Carol (Ronald Pickup and Diana Hardcastle) are negotiating the tricky waters of an exclusive relationship, as Madge (Celia Imrie) juggles two eligible and very wealthy suitors. Perhaps the only one who may know the answers is newly installed co-manager of the hotel, Muriel (Maggie Smith), the keeper of everyone's secrets. As the demands of a traditional Indian wedding threaten to engulf them all, an unexpected way forward presents itself." ~ Written by Fox Searchlight.

Wednesday, September 16, 2015 - 6:30 - 8:00 pm

Instructor: Josh Gitalis, BA(H), CNP, RNCP/ROHP

Our genes work much like a library. They contain a plethora of information, and this information provides the body with instructions on how to operate. Your body can actually choose which genes to express, much like my library search. This phenomenon of "reading" specific genes is well recognized and has been given the name epigenetics. In this lecture, Josh Gitalis, CNP, RNCP will be discussing how we can control the expression of our genes using diet and lifestyle. He will cover the following: What are genes? Genotype versus phenotype. Epigenetics. The latest research on gene expression. Who is expressing their genetic potential, and what are they doing. Don't miss this exciting new class!

Stress & Chronic Inflammation
by Dr. David Wang, ND

Stress and Chronic Inflammation image from goodnessme.ca

Tuesday, September 22, 2015 - 6:30 - 8:00 pm

Instructor: Dr. David Wang, ND

Chronic, low-level inflammation contributes to at least seven out of the ten leading causes of mortality in North America. These include heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease, stroke, Alzheimer's, diabetes, and nephritis.

The danger of chronic inflammation is that it is silent, yet fiercely destructive. Stress-induced inflammation can persist undetected for decades, propagating cell death throughout the body. This silent state of chronic inflammation has been coined "inflammaging".

Chronic low-level inflammation may be threatening your health without you realizing it. In this presentation, you will learn about inflammatory state assessment methods to prevent or reverse chronic inflammation within your body.

Thursday Afternoon Movie
"Elsa & Fred (2014)"

Elsa and Fred 2014 Movie Poster Google image from http://www.impawards.com/2014/thumbs/sq_elsa_and_fred.jpg

Thursday, September 24, 2014 - 2:00 - 4:00 pm

A light-hearted film suitable for Older Adults. FREE. Registration NOT required.

Rated: PG-13 | 97 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance | 7 November 2014 (USA)

Starring: Shirley MacLaine, Christopher Plummer, Marcia Gay Harden

Plot Summary from IMDb. "'Elsa and Fred' is the story of two people who at the end of the road, discover that it's never too late to love and make dreams come true. Elsa has lived for the past 60 years dreaming of a moment that Fellini had already envisaged: the scene in 'La Dolce Vita' at the Fontana di Trevi. The same scene without Anita Ekberg in it, but with Elsa instead. Without Marcello Mastroianni but with that love that took so long to arrive. Fred has always been a good man who did everything he was supposed to do. After losing his wife, he feels disturbed and confused and his daughter decides that it would be best if he moves into a smaller apartment where he ends meeting Elsa. From that moment on, everything changes. Elsa bursts into his life like a whirlwind, determined to teach him that the time he has left to live - be it more or less - is precious and that he should enjoy it as he pleases. Fred surrenders to Elsa's frenzy, to her youth, to her boldness, to her beautiful madness. And this is how Fred learns how to live. When he learns about Elsa's terminal illness, he decides to make her dream come true and takes Elsa to Rome to reenact with her the famous scene at the Fontana di Trevi." ~ Written by Unknown.

Dogs & Underdogs: Finding Happiness

DogFest at Riverwood

Dogs and Underdogs: Finding Happiness at Both Ends of the Leash by Elizabeth Abbott

Sunday, September 27, 2015 - 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Book signing 1:00 pm

"Elizabeth Abbott had always shared her life with dogs. But when worlds collided and her beloved dog Tommy was left behind in Haiti, she set out on a journey that took her from the soulless concrete corridors of an American prison to the halls of Mount Sinai Hospital and the ruins of post-war Serbia, and taught her essential truths about the power of hope and redemption among people changed forever by a wagging tail and a pair of soulful eyes - and dogs who found a new lease on life with devoted human companions."

With wit and passion, Abbott digs down into the deepest roots of the human-animal bond, showing us that together people and dogs can find hope and happiness.

Elizabeth will give a short presentation and sign copies of her book at 1:00 pm at Visual Arts Mississauga at Riverwood.

A portion of the proceeds from book sales will go to Mississauga Animal Services.

Making Clay Leaves
ArtReach for Older Adults
Credit Valley Seniors
October 6, 2015

Art Instructor Corina teaches a group of seniors how to make clay leaves.

About ArtReach for Older Adults:

Seniors are in the spotlight! Visual Arts Mississauga (VAM) at Riverwood is proud to launch its innovative ArtReach for Older Adults program today. VAM is pleased to share the magic of the arts with older adults across the City of Mississauga through its subsidized pilot program.

ArtReach for Older Adults offers exciting art workshops under the guidance of qualified instructors to the Region of Peel's Malton Village, Peel Senior Link and South Common Community Centre. Seniors at these locations will take a creative journey as they explore four months of subsidized art classes. It is estimated that hundreds of seniors will be impacted by the program which brings VAM's popular art experiences out into the community.

VAM is pleased to partner with the Mississauga Senior Council (MSC) to launch the program. Representing more than 50 senior groups across the City of Mississauga, the MSC has offered its guidance and support of the program which will inspire and build confidence in individuals that might not have regular access to VAM programs. Participants will explore a variety of creative practices including painting, drawing, sculpture and more!

ArtReach will encourage social participation and inclusion for older adults while promoting volunteerism. VAM has enlisted a team of senior volunteers to help deliver the workshops alongside VAM's professional teaching staff. These giving individuals have been through rigorous training to prepare for the delivery of the program.

Dedicated volunteer Gordon Salisbury explains, "When you're painting, it's impossible to think of anything else. It's very relaxing. Keeps me out of mischief and happy. Just what seniors need; chews up time (a major enemy of seniors). Older people need hobbies and interests to keep active, young in mind, and therefore happy ... We can pass on the pleasure we get from art to others, and at the same time be rewarded ourselves."

Check out ArtReach for Older Adults in the press! Click here to view our feature in Goodlife Magazine and on Rogers TV Peel.

Book an ArtReach Session Today! Groups or senior centres that are interested in booking an ArtReach workshop are asked to contact VAM at 905-277-4313 or email lisa@visualartsmississauga.com.

The ArtReach for Older Adults Pilot Project is made possible with generous funding provided through the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Program.

ABOUT VISUAL ARTS MISSISSAUGA AT RIVERWOOD: VAM was founded in 1978 and strives to enrich community life by fostering an appreciation of the arts through active involvement in a variety of creative experiences. VAM offers a variety of studio arts courses for adults, teens and children as well as summer camps, school programs, exhibitions, Artsy Parties and ArtReach for schools and corporate team-building. for Dixie Road to Honour Veterans

Poppies Google image from https://nhlife.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/ar133803739028928.jpg

Thursday, October 22, 2015, 7:00 - 9:00 pm

This information is taken from Region of Peel, Public Notice published in Mississauga News, 1 Oct. 2015, p. 38.

The Region of Peel invites the public to attend the open house (drop-in style). Learn about the objectives, the commemoration, why Dixie Road was selected, and share your comments.

The Region of Peel, with the input from the Royal Canadian Legion members and the endorsement of the Regional Council, has selected Dixie Road (in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon) for a commemorative designation of Veterans Memorial Roadway to honour war veterans who served with the Canadian Armed Forces.

The roadway name (Dixie Road) would not change. The designation is simply an addition and is acknowledged with signage along the road.

Lianne Harris delivers a fun, enlightening and interactive presentation that reveals some of the lesser-known but curious elements of the medieval time period not only in Europe but in other parts of the world. What did these cultures exchange with Europe and how did those encounters change the world?

For this presentation, Ms Harris dons a royal 13th century French-Burgundian costume. A display with such medieval paraphernalia allows the participants to see, smell and touch the middle ages.
