Plot summary for Rebelle (War Witch) from IMDB. "Komona, a girl in Sub-Saharan Africa, tells the story to her unborn child about her kidnapping by rebels and forced to join their bloody civil war. When she discovers a valuable intuition about the presence of the enemy, she is elevated as a witch and favored by the rebel leader. However, when a newfound friend convinces her to desert, Komona finds escaping that brutal life is far from easy with its physical and spiritual consequences following her wherever she goes." ~ Written by Kenneth Chisholm.

Enchanted Food
Social Studies Lecture
by Lianne Harris
at Palisades on the Glen
18 September 2013

Apples, pomegranates, peaches and wine
Bread and honey, ambrosia, fishes and swine,
To the Gods that have fed you, make them a shrine
Blessing and curses of food are works of the divine.

WHEN FOOD IS THERE . . . BEWARE!

The social significance of food is culturally mirrored in religious stories, myth, fables and legends which teach us much about responsibility, accountability, commitment and hospitality. Its implication, largely lost in today's modern world, cannot be underestimated to better understand classic literature and holy writ.

In this engaing and visual 1-hour presentation, Lianne Harris takes the participant on a delicious journey into the world of foods and feasting, serving up stories and cultural comparisons to whet your appetite on how to best behave while nibbling, lest YOU be served as food for the Gods!

Lianne has been a history, culture and social studies resource specialist with the Toronto District School Board for almost 20 years and has been the guest instructor and workshop leader for teachers across many boards in Southern Ontario. To date, usually dressed in authentic period clothing, she has taught over 50,000 teachers and students. In 2003, she was selected by W.O.M.A.D. as one of Toronto's Women of Influence. She is the author of many books including 2 medieval novels and non-fiction books on Bangladesh, Odyssey, India, great women in history, historical clothing and costuming, and world travel photography.

Refreshments will be served!

Limited Seating! Please RSVP with Concierge at 905-820-8210 by September 16, 2013 for the 2nd lecture on September 18, 2013.

Therese Desqueyroux (2012 film) from Wikipedia. "Therese Desqueyroux is a 2012 French drama film directed by Claude Miller. It is an adaption of the François Mauriac novel of the same name, first published in 1927. The last work of Claude Miller, who died in April 2012, this film closed the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, where it was screened in competition for the Palme d'Or."

Plot summary from IMDB. "The year is 1926. In the Landes region, free-spirited Therese Larroque, the daughter of a wealthy pinery owner and radical-socialist politician, marries Bernard Desqueyroux, another pinery owner. Although she does it half-heartedly, she thinks that marriage may help her to "sort out all the ideas in her mind". But her disappointment is great. Her wedding night is all but fascinating and when she becomes pregnant she realizes the baby matters more to Bernard than herself. While Therese stifles in her husband's beautiful residence among stiff in-laws who do not think high of her, ideas keep on roaming her mind." ~ Written by Guy Bellinger.

Fables, Fairy Tales
and Rhymes:
by Lianne Harris
at Palisades on the Glen
16 October 2013

Who was the real Humpty Dumpty? How did the Nazis use fairytale themes to manipulate the German people in WWII? What is the historical significance of "Ring Around the Rosie"? Is "Little Red Riding Hood" really just a mother-to-daughter sex talk?

Childhood stories are not the stuff of fantasy. In ages past when illiteracy ran high, these fables and rhymes were the moral classroom where one learned all there was to know about truth, justice, faith, prejudice, love, sex, sin, crime and punishment. Bedtime stories shape our beliefs and teach us about real life.

In this lively 1-hour presentation, Lianne Harris turns the pages of these classic stories and illustrates how - because of our deeply ingrained remembrances of these stories - social, political and religious movements have used them to change our behavior and attitudes.

Please RSVP with Concierge at 905-820-8210 by October 14, 2013 for the 3rd lecture on October 16, 2013.

Sheridan Elder Research Centre (SERC)
Sheridan College Study:
Lifelong Learning Survey - Canadians 65+

Researchers at the Sheridan Elder Research Centre (SERC) are inviting Canadians 65+ to answer the same questions that were asked in Ontario in 2007. The updated results will provide SERC with current information to more effectively respond to the learning needs and interests of adults 65+. Through this update, they hope to receive responses from Canadian provinces, in addition to Ontario, in order to have a picture of the broader Canadian landscape. They are interested in listening to the voices of all Canadians 65+ including those who live in retirement homes and long-terms care homes, settings which did not respond in meaningful numbers in 2007.

You are invited (if you are 65 or older) to complete an online survey. If you are not over 65 yourself but have colleagues and/or friends who may be interested in completing the survey, please forward the following link to the survey to them. The more responses SERC has, the more comprehensive the results will be!

In summary, SERC wants to know more about older adult learning from the perspectives of Canadians 65+. Any information you provide is completely voluntary, confidential and anonymous. The online survey will take approximately 15-30 minutes to complete.

You (or your friend/colleague) may complete the survey by clicking on the link below:
Learning Needs Interests 2013. ** This survey will remain open until December 1, 2013.

This follow-up study has the approval of the Sheridan Research Ethics Board. Please contact Paulina Camino (email: paulina.camino@sheridancollege.ca), assistant to Pat Spadafora, should you have any questions or require additional information.

Coraline (2009 film) from Wikipedia. "Coraline is a 2009 stop-motion 3D fantasy/horror children's film based on Neil Gaiman's 2002 novel of the same name."

Plot summary from IMDb: "A young girl walks through a secret door in her new home and discovers an alternate version of her life. On the surface, this parallel reality is eerily similar to her real life - only much better. But when her adventure turns dangerous, and her counterfeit parents (including Other Mother) try to keep her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination, and bravery to get back home - and save her family." ~ Written by Megan.

Plot synopsis from IMDb: "The movie starts with the dismantling of an old rag doll, and its reconstruction into a little girl. Coraline Jones (voice: Dakota Fanning), a girl of eleven or so, moves with her parents (voices: Teri Hatcher and John Hodgman) into an apartment in a dilapidated pink Victorian house called the Pink Palace Apartments. On a walk with a dousing rod, Coraline meets Wybie Lovat (voice: Robert Bailey Jr.), whose grandmother grew up in the house, and a cat (voice: Keith David) that Wybie says is feral. They find an old well on the hill above the house . . ." ~ Updated by beth-243.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS
By Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!

Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Be a Santa to a Senior
Tree Decorating Event
at Mississauga Seniors' Centre

Be a Santa to a Senior Google image from Blogspot.com

Tuesday, November 12, 2013 - 9:30 - 11:30 am

Share the holiday spirit with the Be a Santa to a Senior service program! It is a way to brighten the lives of the lonely or isolated seniors in our community.

This program has touched so many lives. In the last five years, 60,000 volunteers delivered more than one million gifts to 660,000 seniors. Last year, the Mississauga Seniors' Centre delivered in excess of 250 gifts to seniors right here in Mississauga.

Wrapping Party at Mississauga Seniors' Centre: Thursday, December 12, 2013 - 1:00 - 3:00 pm

Be a Santa to a Senior. YouTube video, 5:02 min. Watch this video to see how this program actually works.

How Be a Santa to a Senior Works: Home Instead Senior Care partners with local non-profit and community organizations to identify seniors who might not otherwise receive gifts this holiday season. The company then works with local businesses and retail stores to help facilitate the purchase and distribution of gifts by placing trees and ornaments within their various locations. Each senior's gift requests are written on a Be a Santa to a Senior tree ornament.

Here's how to help an underprivileged senior:
● 1. Enter your Zip or Postal Code to find the nearest Be a Santa to a Senior tree location.
● 2. Remove an ornament from the tree at the location you choose (gift ideas are printed on each ornament).
● 3. Purchase the gift(s) listed on the ornament.
● 4. Bring ornament and gift back to the store and give to a store employee. (Example: Mississauga Seniors Centre is a participating store location.)
● It's that easy.

Volunteers collect, wrap, and deliver the gifts to the seniors.

Dates vary by location, however, the program typically begins the first week of November with gift collection taking place through mid-December. Volunteers deliver gifts prior to Christmas.

4th Lecture - Plagues and People:
Diseases that Changed History
by Lianne Harris

Lianne Harris Racioppo Google image from http://powerofwomenunited.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/liannabio.jpg
Spread of the Black Death Google image from University of Calgary

Wednesday, November 20, 2013 - 3:00 - 4:00 pm

Lianne will discuss how through history diseases such as the bubonic plague has altered beliefs, instilled fear among people, and drastically changed the world.

"Having entered Europe from the East along trade routes, the Black Death had profound consequences on the European economy and the collective psyche of the population. A deadly combination of exceptionally virulent forms of bubonic plague, spread chiefly by rats infected by fleas, and pneumonic plague, spread by contact with infected people, the Black Death swept through Europe from 1347-1350. Outbreaks of the Plague continued into the 1600's and leaving a legacy within the European mind to this day. Comments such as "avoid it like the Plague" or even the children's nursery song, Ring Around the Rosies (referring to the swellings on the neck that characterized the disease), stem from this period." ~ The End of Europe's Middle Ages / Applied History Research Group / University of Calgary, 1997.

"Ring o' ring o' roses
A pocketful o' posies,
Atishoo! Atishoo!
We all fall down."
This innocent rhyme had a macabre meaning.
The 'ring o' roses' was the red rash that was the first sign of bubonic plague. The 'pocket full o' posies' was the bunch of herbs that people carried, because they thought the plague was transmitted by foul air. They would hold the sweet-smelling herbs under their noses in an attempt to ward off infection.
'Atishoo!', again sneezing violently was one of the first symptoms and was what spread the disease, although they did not know this.
Finally, 'we all fall down' is obvious; everybody dies! ~ Yahoo Best Answer by freebird.

Wednesday, November 20, 2013 - 6:30 pm

Rated: R 98 min - Drama | Romance

Plot Summary from Wikipedia. "The Deep Blue Sea begins with the discovery by her neighbours of Hester Collyer who has tried and failed to commit suicide. Some time before, she left her husband, a respectable High Court Judge, for a semi-alcoholic former RAF pilot, "Freddy Page". The relationship was physical and passionate but his ardour has cooled, leaving her emotionally stranded and desperate.

The aftershocks of her attempted suicide unravel even the remnants of this relationship, but by the end she is brought to a hard decision to live, partly through the intercession of another resident of the tenement house, Mr. Miller, an ex-doctor, struck off for what seems to have been a homosexual offence. These two outcasts, socially ostracised for their 'excessive' loves, find a curious and moving kinship."

Sheridan Elder Research Centre (SERC)
Sheridan College
Complimentary Belly Dancing Workshop

Belly Dancing Costumes Google image from http://bellydancingcostumedeals.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/belly-dancing-costume.jpg

Friday, November 22, 2013 - 10:00 - 11:30 am

Back by Popular Demand!

You are invited to our third workshop to celebrate the joy of aging gracefully and the love of dance! Come and discover the art of BELLY DANCING in a fun, safe and accepting atmosphere.

As many of you know, the Sheridan Elder Research Centre for Creative Aging (SERCCA) is a branch of the Sheridan Elder Research Centre (SERC) that is committed to seeking innovative ways for older adults of all ages and abilities to actively participate in the creative and performing arts. Thanks to some wonderful teachers who volunteer their time and expertise, we have been able to host several complimentary workshops through SERCCA and we look forward to continuing to do so.

On Friday, November 22, 2013, from 10:00 to 11:30 am, we invite you to come in from the cold and warm up by participating in a complimentary belly dancing workshop at Sheridan followed by light refreshments. This is the third time we will offer bellydancing, it has been very popular in the past!

With over 30 years of experience dancing and teaching, Tahira Badre is an inspiring instructor who believes strongly in the holistic benefits of bellydancing and loves to share the art with others. No experience is required, just a willingness to explore and learn! :)

Tahira Badre Goddess Emerging Show Act 1 Highlights. YouTube video, 5:14 min.

Be sure to RSVP soon as space is limited!

Please note the Sheridan Parking instructions below:

Unlike traditional pay stations, Sheridan's new, blue solar-powered 'Pay-by-Plate' pay stations use license plate recognition (LPR) technology to validate parking time. The pay station does not generate a time-stamped paper permit for your dashboard:
1. Park your vehicle in a designated parking lot. Remember to lock it (you won't have to return to place a permit on the dashboard).
2. Proceed to a Pay Station. Key-in your plate number and pay for the time you need.
3. Go! Proceed inside (no need to return to your vehicle to display a paper ticket).

For your convenience, parking time can be 'topped up' at any pay station on campus by re-entering your license plate number. Pay Stations accept VISA and MasterCard, and $1, $2 and $0.25 coins.

It is strongly recommended to have your method of payment ready before inputting your licence plate number, as the machine only allows you a few seconds to pay.

We look forward to seeing you on November 22, 2013!

Space is limited. To register for this complimentary workshop, please contact Paulina Camino, Project Coordinator, Sheridan Elder Research Centre at 905-845-9430, ext. 8617, or

Fight Diabetes with Your Fork!

at Meadowvale Village Hall

Fight Diabetes with Your Fork logo image from Eventbrite

Saturday, December 7, 2013 - 9:30 - 11:30 am

The following message is from Isabel - Trainer Isa:

Current diets explained to diabetics are not powerful enough. If nothing changes, many will remain diabetic or will succumb to heart disease or stroke. If families don't make changes, their children will develop diabetes earlier too.

Register at Eventbrite.com.

First 50 guests win a free blood glucose monitor!

Isabel - Trainer Isa

I'm a certified nutrition education trainer and my name is Isabel. I'm ready to talk to you about how you can end diabetes in your life. One lucky participant will win a copy of Dr. Joel Fuhrman's new book The End of Diabetes: The Eat to Live Plan to Prevent and Reverse Diabetes.

The End of Diabetes: The Eat to Live Plan to Prevent and Reverse Diabetes by Dr. Joel Fuhrman

My program is intended to give people the necessary skills and education to empower them to make changes that will reduce or reverse their diabetes! Can you imagine dropping your meds and insulin within a few weeks? It is possible!

Come learn the best way to prepare and plan what you eat that will help you reverse diabetes or rely less on insulin and medication AND support a good cause! Through our cooking demo, Pampered Chef products will be featured and will be available for sale. All proceeds will benefit the Nutritional Research Foundation which mission is to determine the most ideal diet to prevent, manage and reverse chronic disease while exploring the effectiveness of a high nutrient density (HND) diet on heart disease, migraines, macular degeneration, diabetes, autoimmune illnesses, and cancer prevention and survival.

December 7, 2013 from 9:30 to 11:30 am at Meadowvale Village Hall, 6970 Second Line West, Mississauga.

I've lived my whole life with someone having diabetes. I remember my mother injecting my grandfather with insulin. I learned how to inject my mother-in-law with insulin, and before that, my father had type 2 diabetes too. During my first pregnancy, I was at risk for gestational diabetes. Being surrounded with diabetes was the impetus for me to lose almost 80 lbs myself. I didn't want to be diabetic too!

Many times, I encounter people who don't feel they have the power to control or reverse their type 2 diabetes. Other times, they rely on medication or insulin and think they are okay because their blood sugar is under control. This confusion does not do them any good. They continue to eat and live in the same manner they used to with little changes but many times they continue to cause damage.

It is my pleasure to be of service and to help transform the lives of those who might think there is no hope for them and their diabetes.

Join me and my friend Shannon for a fun event and walk out empowered to change your life! ~ Isabel - Trainer Isa.

Lianne will discuss Angels in Literature, Lore and Art.

Angels are often depicted as a uniquely Christian concept, but we discover that belief in angelic forms is a shared belief by many cultures and religions. Indeed, not all of these supernatural beings even attain wings.

In this 1-hour visual presentation, Lianne Harris explores the metamorphosis of the angel form, its depiction in other cultures through their literature, beliefs, myths and art and the angel's role as messenger, guide, protector, judge, jury and executioner!
