This FUN class encourages you to express yourself with dance moves, tamborines and scarves while you are safely sitting in a chair.
Sit and Dance is a combination of breathing, stretching, exercising and dancing to music while seated in a chair. Each song is music to a dance which may be a German, Italian, Filipino, Hawaiian or New Zealand folk dance, or the Waltz, Twist and Polka. You do only what you can and the dance need not be strenuous.
The class improves body co-ordination and a sense of rhythm, which is very important for seniors who need to move and synchronize their mind and body. It is also a great aerobic exercise, improving circulation, breathing and flexibility. This class is not just for people with physical issues, but is good for everybody!
This is a drop-in program and costs $3.25 per visit.

The Chamber Music Society of Mississauga (CMSM) presents "Our Night Sky"at Erin Mills Town Centre in Mississauga.
Info from CMSM:
"Our Night Sky", is a new, multi-media, multi-cultural,
curriculum based show for young audiences of all ages created and
performed by CMSM.
Inspired by the night sky above us all, "Our Night Sky" is a 50-minute show of storytelling and music. In "Our Night Sky", the narrator, who falls asleep under the night sky at her grandmother's farm, tells the story of a young girl exploring the night sky in her dreams as she remembers the stories from all over the world, that her grandmother told her. A CMSM chamber ensemble accompanies this story.
"Our Night Sky" is also new adventure for CMSM musicians who usually play acoustically but for this show will be experimenting with electronic instruments, improvisation and special sound effects using a synthesizer. The musical score has been created by Mississauga composer, Michael Coghlan and the story that it accompanies has been created by a collaborative team of CMSM's Artistic Director, Peggy Hills, working with Randy Attwood of the Royal Astronomical Society of Mississauga, Angela Fusco, actor, Trish O'Reilly, actor and the performing musicians.
Performing musicians will be Ben Bolt Martin, cello; Peggy Hills, violin; Kim Norris, Chinese and western flute; Richard Moore, percussion; Sharlene Wallace, harp; Barbara Croall, First Nations cedar flute; Subhadra Vijaykumar, carnatic violin; Eileen Keown, piano; Michael Coghlan, synthesizer; and Denis Mastromonaco, conductor.
The Chamber Music Society of Mississauga (CMSM) is proud to introduce the narrators for "Our Night Sky", 14 year old Camille Labonté, singer, actor, guitarist, flute player and pianist, a member of the Mississauga Symphony Youth Orchestra and former member of the Toronto Children's Chorus and the Mississauga Children's Choir, and 16 year old Elise Mariah, singer/songwriter and winner of the Grand Prize and the Fan's Choices awards from The Mississauga Art Council's annual Singfest competition.

On the 15th of the lunar calendar, each month, the moon is at its roundest and brightest, symbolizing togetherness and reunion in Chinese culture. Families get together to express their familial love by eating dinner together, appreciating the moon, enjoying mooncakes, etc. The harvest moon is traditionally believed to be the brightest of the year.
Ancient Chinese emperors worshiped the harvest moon at mid-autumn, as they believed that the practice would bring them a plentiful harvest the next year ... In the early Tang Dynasty (618-907), the day was officially celebrated as a traditional festival. It then became an established festival during the Song Dynasty (960-1279) ... The tradition of eating mooncakes during the festival (Moon Festival) began in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368, a dynasty ruled by the Mongols). ~ Info from: The History and Origins of China's Mid-Autumn Festival.

There are many misconceptions about Haiku. No, Haiku is not simple, it is not a 5-7-5, but just a short poem of three lines.
"Haiku are short three-line poems with a 5-7-5 syllable structure that use sensory language to capture a feeling or image ... Basho, who is considered to be the greatest haiku poet of all time, said that each haiku should be said a thousand times on the tongue. Draft and redraft every poem until the meaning is perfectly expressed. Remember that you don't have to adhere to the 5-7-5 syllable pattern." ~ WikiHow.
Finding the beauty, the craft and the way of Haiku will change your attitudes toward life, nature and the world. Come and find out more ...
In this workshop, you will:
● Learn Haiku with Light, with Mind and with Fun
● Appreciate Haiku through multimedia and
matching
● Discover how to express yourself through Haiku
● Make a small Haiku book

Arlene Etchen,
CMHC
FREE Webinar
Webinars are hosted by Age-Friendly Communities Planning Outreach Initiative.
The Ontario Seniors'
Secretariat has partnered with the University of
Waterloo, the Ontario Interdisciplinary Council
for Aging and Health (OICAH) and the Seniors
Health Knowledge Network (SHKN) to administer a
two-year Age-Friendly Community (AFC) Planning
Outreach Initiative. This initiative is designed
to help communities, including AFC Planning Grant
recipients to:
● Increase awareness of age-friendly planning
principles
● Share best practices
● Start, continue, evaluate and improve on their
AFC action plans.
Seniors now make up the fastest-growing age group in Canada and the majority of them want to age-in-place. The challenge is that most people don't proactively plan how to age in place and end up having to leave their homes when their health declines.
In part one of this two-part seminar, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) will share trends, insights and case studies about housing options for older Canadians.
Click here to register for webinar.
During this webinar, Arlene
Etchen, the presenter, will:
● Provide an overview of demographic trends and
what it means to the housing market
● Share insights from market research about what
seniors want in housing
● Highlight real life examples of seniors housing
options in Ontario
A resource package will be provided to participants following the event.
Webinar: Housing Options for Older Canadians Part 2 will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at 1:00 pm.
About the presenter: Arlene Etchen, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's (CMHC) Knowledge Transfer Consultant in Ontario - "Arlene has been working in the urban planning and energy sectors for more than 15 years. In her role as Knowledge Transfer Consultant, Arlene is focused on engaging with professionals in the housing industry, academics and provincial and municipal governments to ensure access to the latest and most relevant housing information from CMHC. She is currently focused in the areas of integrated accessible and adaptable design, solutions for aging in place and designing for housing affordability." ~ Info from Age-Friendly Communities Planning Outreach Initiative.
