The 11th Annual Community Crime Awareness Day will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2011 from noon to 4:00 p.m. at Mississauga Celebration Square (300 City Centre Drive).

It is organized by the Mississauga Chinese Business Association in partnership with Peel Regional Police, Rogers Television and Safe City Mississauga.

Keeping Mississauga safe needs to be a joint initiative among our community leaders, our police services and the community at large.

While Mississauga has been recognized as the safest city among Canada's nine largest cities every year for the past 10 years, we need your help to advise and inform local residents of the many programs and policing activities offered by Peel Regional Police, so together we can nurture an understanding of each other and build an awareness of safety within our communities and the entire region.

Community Crime Awareness Day serves as a tool for citizens to come together and learn about community safety and policing issues in the region, emphasizing cohesion and municipal harmony.

Community Crime Awareness Day is free to families and will feature demonstrations by a number of community safety partners including the Peel Regional Police's Tactical & Rescue Team.

In addition, we will have lion dances, bag piper teams, folk dances, and tae kwon do and kung fu demonstrations.

Free child identification kits, and games will be available for kids.

Admission to the event is free and food samplings are also offered free of charge. There are free inflatable games for children, face painting, electric car rides as well as the Wheel of Fortune with gift items distributed; making the event a fun and educational day for all.

RCMP, OPP, St. John's Ambulance organizations from different communities and business sponsors will have display booths. Lots of souvenirs and gift items will be distributed free of charge. Enjoy free food and giveaways.

Last year's event attracted more than 10,000 people and we anticipate this year's event will attract an even greater audience!

Plot summary and details from Moviefone.com. "Adapted from Beverly Cleary's perennially popular book series, Ramona and Beezus stars newcomer Joey King as Ramona Quimby, a grade-schooler with a big imagination. So big, in fact, that she often clashes with her no-nonsense teacher (Sandra Oh). When Ramona's upbeat dad (John Corbett) loses his job, the family -- including her teenage sister, Beezus (Selena Gomez), and their practical-minded mother (Bridget Moynahan) -- must make major adjustments, like dad learning how to run the house. Ramona dreams up various plans to make money so that she can save their house, but because everybody in the family seems too preoccupied to help her with her own worries, she turns to the one person who always has time for her, Aunt Bea (Ginnifer Goodwin) . . . Thursday Evening Feature Film: "Stalag 17" (Black & White)
Note: The film "17 Again" has been replaced by "Stalag 17" to honor our Veterans this Remembrance Day (tomorrow November 11, 2011)

Stalag 17 Google image from http://www.posterpalace.com/images/lz/stalag17lc3.jpg

Thursday, November 10, 2011 - 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Stalag 17 (1953 film) from Wikipedia. "Stalag 17 is a 1953 war film which tells the story of a group of American airmen held in a German World War II prisoner of war camp, who come to suspect that one of their number is a traitor . . . Produced and directed by Billy Wilder, it starred William Holden, Don Taylor, Robert Strauss, Neville Brand, Harvey Lembeck, and Peter Graves."

Plot summary from IMDB. "No one has ever escaped from Stalag 17, a POW camp for American airmen near the Danube. Maybe that's because there's a spy in barracks four. The German guards seem to know everything that's happening before it happens. Most of the American POWs suspect Sergeant J.J. Sefton (William Holden), whose wheeling-and-dealing rates him special privileges from the camp guards. When Lieutenant Dunbar arrives at the prison camp, and is accused of blowing up an ammunition train, the American prisoners must expose the stoolie before he informs the Germans where Dunbar is hiding, AND get Dunbar out of the 'unescapable' camp before the SS arrives to take him into custody." ~ Written by Chris Bower.

Plot synopsis from IMDB. "Captured Americans coping with life in a German POW camp in World War II are puzzled by the simplicity with which the Germans are able to stave off escape attempts, shooting those who try. Sefton (William Holden) is a POW who has profitably wagered with his fellow American prisoners that these escapes would fail . . ." ~ Last updated by myturn21.

Plot summary from IMDb: "When Larry Daley, a divorced father who can't seem to keep a job for more than a week, applies for a job at the Museum of Natural History, he is assigned as a night guard. Canadian Veterans Featured in Documentary "HONOUR: Their Stories, Our History"

Mississauga, ON - Last year (2010), in honour of the 65th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, Chartwell Seniors Housing published the book HONOUR featuring the work of renowned Canadian photographer Yuri Dojc. The 80 page book featured the photos and profiles of individuals who were either veterans or supported the war effort and who lived in a Chartwell residence. It was inspired by the death of Canada's last WWI veteran, John Babcock, who passed away in January 2010.

In addition to the photos and stories featured in the book, taped recordings captured many of the inspiring and emotional interviews. That footage has been used to create a special documentary "HONOUR: Their Stories, Our History." The recording carries a timely and poignant message for all Canadians about the ordinary but important stories of these individuals and how close we are to losing this piece of history.

Regency Retirement Residence will host a special screening of the documentary on Wednesday, November 16th from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., at 29 Mississauga Road North. The screening is open to members of the community and anyone interested in attending is asked to RSVP to Sara Gregorash at 905-891-2422.

The Trotsky (2009 film) from Wikipedia. "The Trotsky is a 2009 Canadian comedy film directed by Jacob Tierney."

Plot summary from IMDb. "Leon Bronstein is not your average Montreal West high school student. For one thing, none of his peers can claim to be the reincarnation of early 20th century Soviet iconoclast and Red Army hero, Leon Trotsky. When his father sends Leon to public school as punishment for starting a hunger strike at Papa's clothing factory, Leon quickly lends new meaning to the term 'student union', determined as he is to live out his pre-ordained destiny to the fullest and change the world." ~ Written by Alliance Films.

Plot synopsis from Wikipedia. "Montreal West high school student Leon Bronstein (Jay Baruchel) believes that he is the reborn incarnation of Marxist/Bolshevik leader Leon Trotsky. Shortly after he starts to work in his family's clothing factory, he attempts to unionize the workplace with such actions as a hunger strike. He is pulled from his upper-class private school by his father (Saul Rubinek) and sent to the public school system. There, he continues his quest to live out Trotsky's activism, as he is pitted against the strong-willed principal Mr. Berkhoff (Colm Feore). Meanwhile, he seeks romance with older graduate student Alexandra (Emily Hampshire)." ~ Toronto International Film Festival.

Celtic Woman / Chloe Agnew - ''O Holy Night''. YouTube video, 4:41 min.

CELTIC WOMAN "O HOLY NIGHT" - Lyrics

O Holy Night!
The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining.
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.

A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born,
O night divine, O night,
O night divine!

Chains shall He break,
For the slave is our brother.
And in His name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name.

Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we,
Noel, Noel,
O night, O night divine!
Noel, Noel,
O night, O night divine!
Noel, Noel,
O night, O night divine!

The Autobots and Decepticons become involved in a perilous space race between the U.S. and Russia, to reach a hidden Cybertronian spacecraft on the moon and learn its secrets, and once again Sam Witwicky has to come to the aid of his robot friends. . ." ~ Written by Kris S.

Synopsis from IMDB. "During the final days of the war that devastated the planet Cybertron, a spacecraft known as The Ark attempted to escape. Piloted by the great Autobot leader named Sentinel Prime (Leonard Nimoy), the ship was said to contain special items that could help the Autobots win the war over the Decepticons. However, the ship was hit by enemy missiles, and the ship and its crew were lost into the far reaches of space.

In 1961, the crash of the Ark on the moon is detected by NASA. Fearing that the Russians may beat them to finding out what this unidentified object is, President John F Kennedy pushes for NASA to land men on the moon to investigate. 8 years later, in 1969, Apollo 11 lands on the moon, and astronauts Neil Armstrong (Don Jeanes) and Buzz Aldrin (Cory Tucker) secretly explore the craft. They return with samples and pictures, and future moon missions bring back more information, before the manned moon missions are cancelled . . ."~ Last updated by i_like_circles.

Curator Tara Marshall explaining art work GRACELAND
Curator Tara Marshall explaining the art peice called GRACELAND- Artist Colwyn Griffith reconstructs one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States. Elvis's penchant for junk food and sweets is reflected in the materials used: Betty Crocker frosting covering the exterior, the windows made of fruit roll ups, and gummy cheeseburgers standing in for the lions that flank the entryway to the real Graceland. The piece offers glimpses into Presley's life but, beyond that, its colonial architecture references the history of the race, culture and music in the South and throughout the United States.

Guests and curator looking at sculpture by Fiona Kinsella
Guests and curator looking at a sculpture by Artist Fiona Kinsella,- she uses food as her medium, builds inedible cakes and sculptures that act as reliquaries. The body of work references the idea of sugar as a preservative that never spoils and connects this with the idea of the incorruptible bodies of saints- bodies that do not decay and become soft and pliable.
