Art Instructor Corina teaches a group of seniors how to make clay leaves.

About ArtReach for Older Adults:

Seniors are in the spotlight! Visual Arts Mississauga (VAM) at Riverwood is proud to launch its innovative ArtReach for Older Adults program today. VAM is pleased to share the magic of the arts with older adults across the City of Mississauga through its subsidized pilot program.

ArtReach for Older Adults offers exciting art workshops under the guidance of qualified instructors to the Region of Peel's Malton Village, Peel Senior Link and South Common Community Centre. Seniors at these locations will take a creative journey as they explore four months of subsidized art classes. It is estimated that hundreds of seniors will be impacted by the program which brings VAM's popular art experiences out into the community.

VAM is pleased to partner with the Mississauga Senior Council (MSC) to launch the program. Representing more than 50 senior groups across the City of Mississauga, the MSC has offered its guidance and support of the program which will inspire and build confidence in individuals that might not have regular access to VAM programs. Participants will explore a variety of creative practices including painting, drawing, sculpture and more!

ArtReach will encourage social participation and inclusion for older adults while promoting volunteerism. VAM has enlisted a team of senior volunteers to help deliver the workshops alongside VAM's professional teaching staff. These giving individuals have been through rigorous training to prepare for the delivery of the program.

Dedicated volunteer Gordon Salisbury explains, "When you're painting, it's impossible to think of anything else. It's very relaxing. Keeps me out of mischief and happy. Just what seniors need; chews up time (a major enemy of seniors). Older people need hobbies and interests to keep active, young in mind, and therefore happy ... We can pass on the pleasure we get from art to others, and at the same time be rewarded ourselves."

Check out ArtReach for Older Adults in the press! Click here to view our feature in Goodlife Magazine and on Rogers TV Peel.

Book an ArtReach Session Today! Groups or senior centres that are interested in booking an ArtReach workshop are asked to contact VAM at 905-277-4313 or email lisa@visualartsmississauga.com.

The ArtReach for Older Adults Pilot Project is made possible with generous funding provided through the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Program.

ABOUT VISUAL ARTS MISSISSAUGA AT RIVERWOOD: VAM was founded in 1978 and strives to enrich community life by fostering an appreciation of the arts through active involvement in a variety of creative experiences. VAM offers a variety of studio arts courses for adults, teens and children as well as summer camps, school programs, exhibitions, Artsy Parties and ArtReach for schools and corporate team-building. Poppies Google image from https://nhlife.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/ar133803739028928.jpg

Thursday, October 22, 2015, 7:00 - 9:00 pm

This information is taken from Region of Peel, Public Notice published in Mississauga News, 1 Oct. 2015, p. 38.

The Region of Peel invites the public to attend the open house (drop-in style). Learn about the objectives, the commemoration, why Dixie Road was selected, and share your comments.

The Region of Peel, with the input from the Royal Canadian Legion members and the endorsement of the Regional Council, has selected Dixie Road (in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon) for a commemorative designation of Veterans Memorial Roadway to honour war veterans who served with the Canadian Armed Forces.

The roadway name (Dixie Road) would not change. The designation is simply an addition and is acknowledged with signage along the road.

Lianne Harris delivers a fun, enlightening and interactive presentation that reveals some of the lesser-known but curious elements of the medieval time period not only in Europe but in other parts of the world. What did these cultures exchange with Europe and how did those encounters change the world?

For this presentation, Ms Harris dons a royal 13th century French-Burgundian costume. A display with such medieval paraphernalia allows the participants to see, smell and touch the middle ages.
