Registration and Wine and Cheese starting at 7:00 p.m.

Peter Rowe (born 1947) is a Canadian filmmaker specializing in themes of exploration and adventure. His latest production is the 39 part television series "Angry Planet", which airs on 10 television networks around the world. ~ Wikipedia.

Peter Rowe has filmed on all seven continents, capturing the extremes of nature from Antarctica to the Arabian Desert, crossed Baffin Island by dogsled and climbed many of the world's most active volcanoes, camera in hand.

Peter is one of the first persons ever to stand on a just-born volcanic island in the South Pacific, filming inside a deep newly discovered hot cave full of the world's largest crystals, and flying into the eye of a hurricane are just a few of the wild tales told in Rowe's newly released memoir, Adventures in Filmmaking.

Peter will be reading from Adventures in Filmmaking, showing an episode of his "Angry Planet" series in which he sets up a wedding on the lip of an exploding South Pacific volcano, and introducing his latest project "The Biograph Girl", the story of the world's first movie star, rediscovered in an Ontario retirement home at the age of 106.

Peter will have books and videos for sale at the event.

“Angry Planet” is the place to be for Extreme Adventure Travel Television. Taking you from the volcanoes of the Pacific to the hurricanes of the Atlantic, from the glaciers of Patagonia to the geysers of Iceland, from Oklahoma’s Tornado Alley to the deep wet caves of Vancouver Island, from the Arabian Desert to the Australian Outback, “Angry Planet” visits the world’s most dramatic natural phenomena, and brings them to you in High Definition. ~ Worldwide Adventure Travel Television.

Plot summary from IMDB. "When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family. But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her . . . a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo's empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards . . . and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven." ~ Written by Nicholas Sparks.

Hot Commodities
Social Studies Lecture
by Lianne Harris Racioppo
at Palisades on the Glen
August 29, 2013

What makes a commodity so special? Who assigns its value? What power could a pearl, a tea leaf, a grain of salt yield? Important enough to mount armies? Send explorers? Use as tribute? Pay a king's ransom? How could the world be held hostage by these often frivolous goods, temptingly dangling before us to buy, trade, exchange --- and yes, perhaps even sometimes use.

In this engaging one-hour presentation, Lianne Harris Racioppo will take a look at the top commodities in history and examine why they were coveted, what purpose they served, who was willing to pay the price for them - and who ended up suffering for it. Kingdoms and empires were built, and destroyed, by these fickle and elusive products. An enlightening and enthusiastic look at treachery, greed, power, tenacity and contrived luxury that exploited the world and which benefits we still demand and which fruits we still poignantly reap.

Lianne has been a history, culture and social studies resource specialist with the Toronto District School Board for almost 20 years and has been the guest instructor and workshop leader for teachers across many boards in Southern Ontario. To date, usually dressed in authentic period clothing, she has taught over 50,000 teachers and students. In 2003, she was selected by W.O.M.A.D. as one of Toronto's Women of Influence. She is the author of many books including 2 medieval novels and non-fiction books on Bangladesh, Odyssey, India, great women in history, historical clothing and costuming, and world travel photography.

Summer cool down refreshments will be served!

Limited Seating! Please RSVP with Concierge at 905-820-8210 by August 27, 2013 for the first lecture on August 29, 2013.

Upcoming Lectures in the Social Studies Series will be on the following topics:
● September 18, 2013 ~ Enchanted Food
● October 16, 2013 ~ Fables, Fairytales and Rhymes: Lesson for Real Life
● November 20, 2013 ~ Queen's Closet
● December 18, 2013 ~ Winged Majesty
