NEW PROGRAMS FOR THE SPRING

Kurling

Tuesdays, 11:35 am - 12:15 pm Fee: $1.00 per visit.
Watch the Program Board for start dates.

Love to curl or play shuffleboard? Come out and try this new game. Players glide the "stones" toward the target. The one closest to the bull's-eye scores a point, and pusher may be used.

Tatting

Tuesday, May 5 - May 26, 2009 from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Fee: $6.00 for 4 weeks (pre-registration is required).

Learn this wonderful heirloom craft. Tatting is a technique for handcrafting a particularly durable lace constructed by a series of knots and loops. Tatting can be used to make lace edging as well as doilies, collars, and other decorative pieces.

Urban Pole Walking

Tuesdays, 9:15 am - 10:15 am Starting on May 5, 2009
Fee: $5.00 per visit (poles are provided).

Looking to update your walk? Urban poling provides a full body workout that burns additional calories, increases your heart rate and oxygen consumption more than you would achieve by simply walking. Yet, you don't feel as though you're working any harder. In essence, you burn on average about 20 per cent more calories, work extra muscles and gain greater aerobic benefits. Class includes warm-up in the Centre, pole walking outside and a stretch afterwards!

BEYOND BALLROOM

Do you enjoy watching "Dancing with the Stars"? Then you will love to see live demonstrations of International and Latin Ballroom Dancing!

Friday, May 8, 2009. Starting at 7:30 pm
Ticket Price: Members $8.00, Guests (all ages) $10.00.

Watch a salsa demonstration, then try it out for yourself, or ballroom dance with Merilyn's class. Hors d'oeuvres and desserts top off this elegant evening.

TECHNOLOGY AND GROWTH
AT THE OLDER ADULT CENTRE

While most of us think paperwork is, at best, a necessary evil, to the Administrative Team at the Older Adult Centre, it is very exciting. The details included on all the membership, program and donation forms we process daily tell some very interesting stories. However, as the Centre has grown, our ability to manage all this great knowledge has been chalalenged.

To ensure we could plan well for the future and protect our members' privacy, we needed sophisticated software to help us sort through this information. After extensive research, a product was purchased, and in March 2009 all staff attended training sessions for our new relational software: Income Manager. Training was excellent and focused on each very useful component of the software including event and volunteer management. The software was installed on all systems and the converted membership data was downloaded into the new software. In addition, an imaging software was installed on all systems to allow other mission critical files to be saved to our new data storage drive ensuring a high level of security.

Achieving this level of sophisticated data management is a hallmark of maturity for the Centre. As well as assisting with the financial reporting required by a charity, using this software will, over time, greatly increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the work achieved by the Board and Staff of the Centre.

Alhough it will take some time to update records, over the next few years, the ability to track trends, report accurately and pull essential information in minutes, will provide many new pathways and opportunities for directing fundraising, programming, volunteer and marketing activities. This software purchase and staff training was made possible by an Ontariio Trillium Foundation grant. Many thanks to the Planned Giving Committee and in particular to Sue Hesjedahl for piloting this very successful endeavor.
