Message from the Executive Director

Thank you for your continued support of Older Adult Centre. Together, we have achieved great things in the last few months. We thank all who participated in and contributed to our most successful Walk-a-thon in October 2008 raising over $19,000 (exceeding our goal by $3,000). We sincerely thank the 82 members and volunteers who came out that morning to participate. You should be very proud of yourselves. We congratulate Edna Michelin, Cam Wooledge and George Toyota who were again our top 3 pledge collectors! We thank our event sponsor: Chartwell Classic at Robert Speck.

I would like to congratulate our full-time staff (Laura, Anne, Karmela and Lina) for their continued excellent service and dedication to our members and volunteers of Older Adult Centre. Over the last year, we have increased our membership enrollment to an all time record high of over 1500 members.

I would also like to comment on the great commitment from our Board of Directors who support me and the staff to achieve great things. We would not have succeeded if we did not have such exellence on our Board. A listing of the Board of Directors is on the back page of this newsletter. Annually, the Board of Directors reviews the 5-Year Vision and Strategies for Achievement and updates our Business Plan for the Centre. This year, we are looking at expanding our health services, creating new partnerships and other self sustaining projects. We continue to receive excellent support from the City of Mississauga, Square One Shopping Centre and the Mississauga Central Lions Club. We have received government grants this year from the Ontario Trillium Foundation focusing on marketing and community development. As noted in our Donor Board Letter, we received capital funding to renovate the Program Room from the New Horizons for Seniors Program. Service Canada gave us a small grant to hire a summer student this past summer. We also receive a small grant annually from the Ministry of Health under the Elderly Person Centre Grant (EPC).

We are working on creating some new funding opportunities for our Centre. Recently, we submitted two proposals to the Mississauga Halton LHIN (Local Health Integration Network) asking for modest funding to start a Telephone Reassurance Program and a free Dental Screening Program at the Older Adult Centre. We will be meeting with a lawyer soon to explore the requirements to become a registered charity and therefore have the ability to issue our own tax receipts to our generous donors. At this point in time, we are an incorporated non-profit organization. Becoming a charity would open doors to new funding and government support.

Older Adult Centre has been an active member of the Older Adult Centres' Association of Ontario (OACAO) for 15 years and I have served on the Board of Directors of the OACAO for over 10 years in various capacities. My involvement with the provincial association has provided me with opportunities to network and share ideas with colleagues across the province. The OACAO has been actively advocating on behalf of Older Adult Centres across Ontario. For more information, please check out their website at www.oacao.org. Our Centre has received funding from the Ontario Senior Secretariat via the OACAO to offer our annual Seniors Information and Active Living Fairs. Our next Fair is scheduled for March 2009. Laura, Karmela and I recently attended the OACAO annual conference and had the opportunity to learn from expert speakers on current topics. I look forward to holding the position of 1st Vice President of the OACAO for 2008/2009 as we continue to advocate for Older Adult Centres including enhanced funding from the Ministry of Health.

Please take note of the green insert in this newsletter. This is our Annual Donor Board Letter and donation form. We hope that you will consider participating in this campaign.

Thank you again for your support and we look forward to seeing you often at the Older Adult Centre.

~ Sue Hesjedahl, Executive Director
