Ancient Rome
Presentation by Lianne Harris

Quo Vadis Nero Google image from http://www.romae-vitam.com/images/Quo-Vadis-Nero.jpg
Quo Vadis - Nero

Thursday, August 10, 2017 - 3:00 - 4:00 pm

Rome wasn't built in a day - and in this interactive and costume-filled presentation, Lianne explains the powerful, and sometimes complicated, history behind the "eternal city".

Who met their friends at shopping malls, vacationed in trailer homes, lived in six-storey apartment buildings? Who ate pizza? Used a curling iron? Mississauga women? Not so!

Fun, interactive participation with the learners reveal some of the lesser-known but curious elements of the Roman world: What ideas or goods did they borrow or copy from other cultures? Who, in turn, did they influence? How did the everyday Roman approach birth, marriage, and death? What influences still shape our lives and what habits do we still adhere to 2500 years later?

Introducing participants to Ancient Rome, Lianne Harris dons a wealthy Roman matron's stola, palla and diadem. A full array of classical paraphernalia as writing implements, statuary, grooming tools, clothing, weaponry, household items, food, games, authentic coins and household wares, grooming aids, textiles and archeological finds allow the participants to see and touch the ancient world!

Lianne has been a history, culture and social studies resource specialist with the Toronto District School Board for almost 20 years and has been the guest instructor and workshop leader for teachers across many boards in Southern Ontario. To date, usually dressed in authentic period clothing, she has taught over 50,000 teachers and students. She is the author of many books including A Winter's Knight (a blending of medieval history and fiction for teeenage readers), two medieval novels as well as non-fiction books on Bangladesh, Odyssey, India, great women in history, historical clothing and costuming, and world travel photography.

Please call 905-566-4500 or email mississauga@vivalife.ca to RSVP.

"Eyes wear the wings of time to fly beyond the cry of human desires, reveries and the realities, penetrating into the boundaries of the visible universe into the invisible realms. Eyes symbolize seeing and light, and therefore depicting consciousness itself. The eye is the part of us that beholds the universe and sees our place in it. It is knowledge, awareness and wisdom. The eye takes in light, the pure energy of the universe, and presents it to the inner spirit. It is the gateway, the very union, between the self and the cosmos. It has been said that the eye is the window to the soul."

Meena Chopra is an internationally known award-winning visual artist and poet with an unbridled passion for space, colours, forms and words. She has been practicing her arts for over three decades now. Born and brought up in Nainital, North India and now in Canada, Meena graduated from Isabella Thorburn College Lucknow, India. Later qualified as a designer in 1977 from Delhi India and as an Artist Educator from RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music) Ontario. Primarily a self-taught artist, she trained and mentored under the master artist Rameshwar Broota at Triveni kala Sangam, New Delhi, where she took art and sculpture classes. She has been professionally practicing visual arts since 1985.
