Message from Your Executive Director!

Dear members, volunteers and friends of the Centre:

It is with great pleasure that I bring you this update on Square One Older Adult Centre happenings and activities.

Winter has been a particularly busy time at the Centre, and we have witnessed many membership renewals and 91 new individuals swell our ranks in January alone, as we welcomed further members from northern Mississauga who have joined through our satellite location in Meadowvale - welcome all!

Trips both far and wide and close by to destinations such as the Caribbean, Simcoe to view the Christmas lights, and Casino Rama have proven very popular with our members and friends alike. Forty-nine people attended the recent trip to The Old Mill Inn in February, which by all accounts was a hilarious whodunit murder mystery matinee.

Eight special events were held at the Centre in December, not to mention the successful staging of our fifth annual Giftwrap fundraiser in the Mall. Thanks to your volunteer efforts and patronage of our booth, we netted $ 24,990.80 -- our second best year ever!

On January 19, 2012, it was our Centre’s privilege to host the Hon. Dr. Alice Wong, Minister of State for Seniors, and a selection of individuals from 12 senior-focused organizations, plus 3 local MPs from the Peel Region, for an enlightening Roundtable discussion on Elder Abuse. Our Centre was only one of 3 sites chosen in Ontario to host a pre-budget session on this complex and important issue.

As mentioned, our Mississauga West site is growing and going strong and now boasts 56 members attending over 15 weekly programs and events. Again, we extend our thanks to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for funding this endeavor.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming shows/fundraisers over the next few months, especially our free Seniors Health Promotion and Active Living Fair, taking place on March 22 and 23, 2012. It is sure to be a highlight of the early spring as 90 seniors-oriented businesses and not-for-profits booths will be featured over the two days.

And, as always, thank you for your ongoing support of our Centre and our Mission – an enhanced quality of life for Mississauga residents 50+. It is a pleasure to work alongside you in achieving our shared goal.

Warmest wishes for a Happy, Healthy and Vibrant Spring,

~ Linda Salb, Executive Director, SQOAC

Greetings from Your Board of Directors!

The Board thanks you for the confidence you have placed in the Centre by renewing your membership from year to year. We finished the year 2011 with 1710 membership registrations. Such confidence inspires your Board to aspire to greater heights. We achieve this with feedback from you, our members; and by introducing new programs. A warm welcome to all new members. The year 2012, the Year of the Dragon, is shaping up to be a challenging and exciting year.

Board Activity:

Our current Director of Marketing is Linda Keen-Lausberg. Linda replaces Ajit Zacharias who moved to Markham. Ajit is still willing to share his talents with us as needed. Your Annual General Meeting is scheduled for June 28, 2012. At this meeting, the Board reports to the members; you are given the opportunity to elect a new Board of Directors and share your concerns and opinions.

Volunteering:

As many of you may know, April is Volunteer Appreciation Month. We celebrate our volunteers without whom we could not function effectively. You are the ‘backbone’ of this organization known as Square One Older Adult Centre. Please make an effort to attend this event.

New Programs:

Our Program Coordinator, Laura Surman, acknowledges the growth of the membership by introducing new programs which will delight and challenge our members. Some of the programs are: waltz round dancing, big band swing, and a return to tap, which take us back to ‘yesteryears’, smart phone and iPad workshops. Dates and times for these programs will be listed in the Brochure. Remember June is Seniors’ month, so look out for activities to delight and enhance your days. Keep Thursday, June 21 open for Amica’s annual ‘BBQ in the Park’.

Mississauga West – Off-Site Location:

Mississauga West is growing. It is a pleasure to welcome the Mississauga West members to the SOOAC family. Mississauga West is also offering some events that you will enjoy. Join your Mississauga West members for the St. Patrick’s Day Tea Party on Thursday, March 13, 2012 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 Noon (there is a small fee) and the Strawberry Social on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Drop in any time and introduce yourselves.

Thanks to all members for giving so freely of your time and talents.
